Study Program Doctorate

The Doctoral Program in Tropical Biodiversity Conservation was established through the
merger of the Tropical Biodiversity Conservation (KVT) Study Program and the Ecotourism
and Environmental Services Management (MEJ) Study Program, which was originally
established in 2007 based on the Rector’s Decree of IPB No. 027/K13/PP/2007.
The Doctoral Program in Tropical Biodiversity Conservation (KVT) is a research-oriented,
leading, and innovative graduate program dedicated to advancing scientific knowledge in
tropical biodiversity conservation, sustainable ecotourism management, and environmental
services. The program is designed to produce globally competitive graduates who are
capable of managing biodiversity responsibly and contributing meaningfully to sustainable
development.
The KVT curriculum integrates core competencies in conservation science, quantitative and
qualitative research methodologies, ecotourism management, environmental services, and
public policy analysis. Students are equipped with the capacity to design and implement
conservation programs and sustainable ecotourism initiatives grounded in ecological, social,
and economic principles, while conducting innovative research to assess the impacts of
conservation and nature-based tourism activities.
Learning activities are directed toward developing a comprehensive understanding of the
interrelationships among biodiversity, human activities, and environmental services,
including bioprospecting and tropical ecosystem dynamics. The program further strengthens
managerial and decision-making competencies through policy studies, environmental impact
assessment, and facilitation of multi-stakeholder partnerships.


The Doctoral Program in Tropical Biodiversity Conservation offers two strategic areas of
specialization designed to enhance graduate learning outcomes:


1. Tropical Biodiversity Conservation – This specialization emphasizes the development
of scientific and research competencies in understanding tropical ecosystem
dynamics, species and habitat conservation, conservation genetics, ecosystem
restoration, and the analysis of anthropogenic impacts on biodiversity. Students are
prepared to generate science-based solutions that support sustainable biodiversity
management and the formulation of conservation policies.


2. Ecotourism and Environmental Services Management – This specialization focuses
on the planning and management of sustainable ecotourism, the development of
environmental services, socio-economic and environmental impact analysis,
destination planning, sustainable marketing, and policy evaluation in nature-based
tourism. Students acquire managerial and strategic competencies to optimize
economic benefits while ensuring ecosystem sustainability.


Supported by experienced faculty members, strong national and international networks,
applied research activities, and community engagement programs, graduates of KVT are
prepared to pursue careers as researchers, academics, professional practitioners,
policymakers, environmental consultants, and sustainable entrepreneurs in the fields of
tropical biodiversity conservation, ecotourism, and environmental services.

Mission

Mission of the Tropical Biodiversity Conservation (KVT) Study Program
1. To deliver high-quality and holistic Doctoral education that produces outstanding
and competent graduates who are responsive to the needs of biodiversity
conservation, ecotourism management, and environmental services.


2. To develop innovative, collaborative, and impactful research, in partnership with
national and international institutions, in order to generate scientific and
technological solutions that support biodiversity conservation, sustainable
ecotourism development, and optimal and sustainable environmental services
management.

3. To conduct community engagement activities through the dissemination of research
outcomes, training, and mentoring in tropical biodiversity conservation, ecotourism,
and environmental services, thereby enhancing public awareness, empowering local
communities, and supporting sustainable development.


4. To implement a transparent and accountable higher education management
system, while establishing strong networks and partnerships with
stakeholders—including government, private sector, non-governmental
organizations, academics, and local communities—to realize the program’s vision in
alignment with scientific advancements in tropical biodiversity conservation,
ecotourism management, and environmental services.

The Doctoral Program in Tropical Biodiversity Conservation (KVT) is established under the
Rector’s Decrees of IPB University No. 027/K13/PP/2007 in conjunction with No.
071/13/PP/2007 concerning the establishment of postgraduate study programs, and further
strengthened by Rector’s Decree No. 235/IT3/DT/2012 regarding the development of
postgraduate programs and academic departments.

The core mandate of the KVT Doctoral Program is to advance scientific knowledge and
produce highly qualified human resources in tropical biodiversity conservation, sustainable
ecotourism management, and environmental services through research-based education,
innovation development, and policy-oriented approaches to natural resource management.


The program is mandated to:
1. Provide Doctoral degrees that focus on a wide range of skills in biodiversity
conservation, ecotourism management, and environmental services


2. Develop leading research initiatives that support biodiversity protection, ecosystem
restoration, sustainable tourism management, and environmental services
optimization.


3. Contribute to public policy formulation and sustainable natural resource governance
at local, national, and international levels.


4. Establish collaborative networks with government agencies, private sector
institutions, research organizations, civil society groups, and local communities to
strengthen conservation and sustainable development efforts.


Through this mandate, the KVT Doctoral Program serves as a Centre of Excellence for
scientific advancement, applied research, and policy innovation in tropical biodiversity
conservation and sustainable environmental management.
